I volunteered in Cusco, Peru for two weeks as an English Language Assistant at Glorioso Colegio Nacional De Ciencias with ProjectsAbroad. As an English Language Assistant, it was my duty to assist students with proper pronunciation of English words, practice conversational skills through classroom activities and games, assist students with writing, proper spelling, and correct grammar, use my basic foundational Spanish skills to communicate with students and translate words for more understanding, work alongside the English teachers to come up with strategies and ideas that would help students to retain their learning, and more. Overall, as much as this experience was a challenging one, I can certainly say that it was nothing short of amazing- I took the leap to travel solo to a foreign country, be surrounded by a new culture and language that is not native to me, and be the only volunteer in the classroom with the teacher and students. This experience showed me that I am courageous, I am resilient, and I possess the ability to adapt.
