About Brit Smith

As a Branding Designer, my journey has been one of many creative passions as reflected in my portfolio. After 15 years in the industry, it is my on-going mission to support Sustainable Projects, Minority and Female-Founded Businesses, along with LGBTQ, Wellness, and Body Positive Brands. I look forward to opportunities that allow me to work with fun progressive clients—to dream, collaborate, and develop something inspiring with a purpose. Let’s create something better together. My creative services include branding, print, packaging, social media content creation, photo editing, and web design. A brief history of my creative journey:Atlanta-born in 1982 into a family of creative’s, I grew up alongside my father’s photography business. This gave me a meticulous eye for details, photo composition, lighting, set styling, and retouching. I gravitated toward typography and logo design in high school but quickly found my true passion after being exposed to the world of packaging during college. In 2001, I spent a year in community college on a soccer scholarship taking photography and drawing classes before transferring to a graduate art school. There I attended 2 years majoring in Graphic Design. After graduation in 2004, I moved out to California to pursue my career with a prominent focus in branding and packaging. The past 15 years have allowed so much personal growth; helping to finesse my skills while also providing opportunities to extend my body of knowledge in areas like management, development in social media, and designing environmental spaces for trade shows. I’ve spent 10 years in the beauty industry and 5 years in tech. In 2019, I began my own business journey after receiving an opportunity to launch a sustainability-focused brand and joined the Professional Beauty Association. Since then, my Domestic partner and I of 6 years—a creative himself—decided to combine our catalog of tools to offer our clients the complete branding experience.

Listed skills include Photography, Product Design, Graphic Design, Image Manipulation, and 31 others.

Us

It has been a pleasure to reunite with the team at John Paul Mitchell Systems since my last journey with them back in 2014. This time around as Digital Asset Manager, also known as a librarian or archivist, I am responsible for reformatting, curating, cataloging, and managing files with efficient naming in collaboration with developing best storage practices on a DAM system. Digital assets can include, company product and model imagery, icons, logos, graphics, and any other assets required by internal departments such as marketing, web development, and design teams. I am thrilled to be able to offer a Designer's perspective while making use of my eye for detail and organizational habits to find better file management solutions.

Current
Brit Smith Creative

With experience in multiple creative fields, I have learned over time I am happiest when I am able to play in all the mediums I have been exposed to during my career. Since starting my business journey I have been able to work on passion projects that have led to more conscious choices like using sustainable materials. Joining the Professional Beauty Association has allowed me to attend more trade shows, meet new vendors and educate myself on what’s here and what’s on the horizon. These have been the most valuable tools in better assisting my clients in the growth of their brands. I think it goes without saying when starting out on your own business venture that there is a steep learning curve—not just in the infrastructure logistics, but also in the personal adjustments of finding your voice and balance through it all.

Mar 2019 - Present

Sr. Designer & Art Director

El Segundo, Ca, Us

Belkin International afforded me many creative opportunities during my 4 years: expanding my knowledge and skills outside of print and packaging. During my first year with them as a Senior Designer—responsible for packaging and collateral—I was tasked with designing their trade show space at CES and Best Buy Expos. In 2016, with social media on the rise as an advertisement tool, Belkin appointed me to manage photo and video shoots for their platform, globally. During those years I ran with a lean team of 2 other women—shooting guerilla style, utilizing in-house resources on a minimal monthly budget. My responsibilities included: art direction, set styling, conceptualizing, planning, location-scouting, talent-booking, and inventory, along with helping in editing, retouching and parts modeling. Before parting ways with Belkin for my own “Eat, Love, Pray” life adventure, my team and I orchestrated and produced 2 commercial ads, which is an experience I’ll always remeber.

Oct 2014 - Sep 2018

Sr. Designer & Digital Retoucher

Us

As a common theme you might take notice reading through my career is that though my journey starts as a print and packaging designer, my path tends to break-off into another. I find that these opportunities arise due to my creative nature—interested in a wide range of the varying fields of design. I originally joined John Paul Mitchell Systems as a packaging designer but quickly found a calling in retouching when a new position opened. With an eye for detail and experience from past project, I had contemplated the possibility of pursuing retouching as a career and felt that this was an optimal time to try it out. Apart from retouching all imagery for their catalogs I assisted in the management of the production team.

Nov 2013 - Oct 2014

Sr. Designer

Tresemme

With 6 years in the beauty industry and while working at John Paul Mitchell Systems, Tresemme offered me part-time work creating ads—featured in over 15 major print and digital publications, as well as on New York bus wraps. Balancing both a full-time and part-time job had its challenges, but I could not have been more grateful to work with them. I still reach out to them from time-to-time.

Oct 2013 - Sep 2014

Sr. Designer

Los Angeles, California, Us

Creed Strategic Imaging was the company that really shaped my career: pushing me to discover new skills and passions within myself. They gave me the first real opportunity to immerse myself in beauty packaging. The owners wore many different hats; expecting their designers to do the same—we thrived on that freedom. With offices in Los Angeles and New York, I worked in collaboration with a fully staffed team for start-ups, Fortune 500 clients, and everything in between. During my 6 years with Creed I was involved in everything from brand development of print and packaging, in-house photography and retouching, 2D renderings, dieline structures and environmental spaces. I also spent a lot of time attending press checks to monitor print quality and design integrity while educating myself on printing processes and paper resources.

Oct 2007 - Sep 2013

Sr. Designer

Guthy Renker

Guthy Renker, well known for their many direct-to-consumer products, hired me on to design print and packaging collateral for their infomercials. During my time I designed for coin collections, but more notably, my first project was to develop a hair tool and beauty line system now known as The Croc. My roles included: product photography, retouching, print, packaging, dieline creation, prepress production and press check management.

Nov 2005 - Oct 2007

Jr. Art Director

Long Beach, Ca, Us

Looking to expand my experience, I was relocated by The Designory, where I worked on the brand development and editorial layouts for an independent bank.

Aug 2005 - Oct 2005

Graphic Designer

Farheap Solutions

After moving out to California from Atlanta I caught my very first job at this small shop designing stationary and postcards.

Mar 2005 - Aug 2005

Studio Assistant

Fratelli Studio

Growing up with 4 uncles and a father as professional photographers—there was no guess that I would be assisting, learning the foundations of lighting, styling and composition.

Nov 2002 - Oct 2004

Graphic Design Intern

Unboundary

During my first year in college for design, Unboundary took me under their wing opening my eyes to team collaborations and brand development.
