'Your past defines who you are today'"I don't necessarily see myself as a photographer. Rather as an artist. Historical stories and movies, pictorial art and structures from nature are an important foundation to my work. But I also find inspiration in old objects with a story that I find on secondhand websites and garage sales. Give me a story and I dive into it. Only when I can grasp such a story, I'm able to take the photograph."Photographer Britt Roelse (Eersel, 1986) works at design hotspot Sectie-C in Eindhoven. She graduated from the Academy for Arts and Design Sint Joost with specialization visual arts. Her education also includes Interior & Styling (Sint Lucas, Boxtel), Fashion & Advertisement Photography (Royal Academy for Visual Arts, The Hague) and Documentary Photography (High School for Arts, Utrecht)Britt's work is atmospheric and melancholic and its visual language leans towards the pictorial art from the 17th century. Her visual references to the past derive from her admiration for traditional crafts, the dedication to it and her love for the beauty of hard work."When I was a child, I wanted to be an archaeologist. I used to watch National Geographic Channel and Discovery Channel and was fascinated by stories of earlier generations. The pictorial art from the 17th and 18th century shows countless staged moments of crafts and workmen. This has an enormous attractive power on me."Britt's most excellent projects are the ones where she has direction over all the phases: research, styling, make-up and the finishing touch of the series. Characteristic for her work is her energetic interaction with her team and models. This results in powerful and most of the time personal photos that dare to show vulnerability, deep desires and loneliness of the human being on both the internal and external level. Her project Checkpoint Charlie shows the pain of living with forced decisions. At the same time Britt's work shows a soft, silent, poetic side with detailed, baroque (nature) compositions, as in her project Florarium Temporum.Her motto 'your past defines who you are today' describes her as the person behind the lens and also her visual language.
