Inpatient Cardiac Rehab Exercise Physiologist
CurrentProvide education to; MI, stented, and open heart surgery patients and their families. Together we discuss topics which include: understanding what it means to live with heart disease, basic cardiac anatomy, warning signs for MI and stroke, understanding all risk factors for heart disease specific to the patient and how they can be modified, important components of a healthy diet, stress and emotions as well as the support groups available, basic medication information and their importance, and home guidelines. For open heart patients I review and reinforce sternal precautions and other essential information regarding their incision(s), coughing and deep breathing exercises, and concepts of energy conservation. Patients are also educated on the principles and importance of exercise and receive a personalized home walking program in order to prevent problems associated with bed rest. Before the patient is discharged I send a referral to begin the Phase II Outpatient Cardiac Rehab program closest to their residence.
