Teacher-Intern, Mathematics Department
During two of my undergraduate summers, I worked with an incredible team at the New Haven site of Breakthrough Collaborative. In our program site at the Hopkins School, I was able to collaborate with enthusiastic fellow teachers, passionate and community-driven mentors, and young students who still inspire me to this day.During our program, we worked with ambitious students from New Haven Public Schools in academic courses, mentorship experiences, extracurricular activities, and program-wide events. Both educators and students united in a shared passion for learning—and for our incredible local community.During both years, I led summer-long algebra courses, working with inspiring middle school students and our innovative math department team. I designed my standards-based curriculum, built comprehensive daily lesson plans, and grew as an educator and mentor. I received ongoing feedback from experienced and tenured teachers from public and private high schools in CT, and I was asked to return for a second summer.During each summer academic program, I led multiple course periods each day, exploring algebra with my classrooms of rising 9th-graders. I provided ongoing assessments and continually diversified my instruction and approaches. I worked to not only further my students’ algebra mastery, but also to cultivate their confidence and enthusiasm as learners and future community-builders.During those summers, I grew as an educator in an immersive, inspiring, and inclusive space—and I continue to embrace insights built with Breakthrough to this day. In my current work with high school students, we address much more than personal achievement. We discuss ways they can assist their own communities and uplift diversity, equity, and inclusion in every space.I am inspired by the opportunity to help students pursue not only intellectual curiosities, but also the missions important to them—and essential to our world.
Branch Manager & Sat Course Instructor
In 2010, I began working with a fellow ambitious Penn undergrad to launch our CT location of Ivy Insiders, a leading innovator in test preparation that year. Ivy Insiders selected our 600+ instructor network through the start-up's mission: providing courses led by instructors with Ivy League acceptances, verified elite SAT/ACT scores, proven skills in teaching, and a passion for their communities. After collaboratively launching our Ivy Insiders Branch that spring, my colleague and I each instructed intensive SAT & ACT preparation courses for our CT students that summer. With our self-created lesson plans, company-innovated practice materials, and ongoing collaboration with our start-up mentors, we led highly-successful SAT & ACT Preparation courses for our CT-based students.During my individually-led SAT Courses, I worked to inspire confidence for students across 7 private and public high schools in CT. My 30+ students were able to achieve their score improvement goals during each of my intensive courses. To deliver a course that truly benefited all learners, I developed customizable assignments, provided in-depth weekly feedback to every student, and continually modified lessons to help every student grow.Through our collaborative marketing efforts and outreach to our local networks, my colleague and I were able to become one of the region’s highest-performing branches that year. In weekly meetings with our multi-state region, we shared updates with our regional manager and colleagues. My co-manager and I were commended for our branch’s quickly-expanding network and positive client feedback on several occasions, and I was recognized within our region for customizable assignments and innovative lesson planning.Since the start-up's acquisition by industry leader Revolution Prep, Ivy Insiders’ legacy has continued not only through test preparation—but also through the skills our instructor team was able to build as leaders, managers, and mentors.
