Assisted with surface water and groundwater data collection and field research along the Florida Gulf Coast as a part of a larger project to determine carbon transport within a salt marsh ecosystem. I installed groundwater wells containing pressure transducers and performed resistivity surveys to map and monitor groundwater hydraulics of a perched aquifer along the coast. I also installed stilling wells and deployed acoustic Doppler meters to understand surface water fluxes within the tidal creek system. I supported data analysis to help quantify the seasonal changes in carbon flux across the land-sea interface.I supervised students in the laboratory and field with a variety of tasks centered around field hydrology techniques. Laboratory work included grain size analyses, porosity and permeability measurements, nutrient analyses by colorimetry, and determination of percent organic matter. Field activities included discharge measurements, water sample collection, and using a laser level to determine elevation profiles. Over a semester, I mentored a small group of students as they designed and completed research projects using the scientific method while learning simple hydrology concepts and field techniques.
