I road tripped around South Africa, Canada, and the US, learned how to lead climb both sport and trad, got into long distance cycling and sewed my own custom bike bags, and learned conversational French. [freespace] began in June 2013, as a part of the White House's National Day of Civic Hacking when a 14,000sf building was gifted to the community for just $1. In one month, [freespace] SF hosted 200+ free events, 30+ murals, incubated a free bike share, maker classes for people in homeless shelter & community garden. It instigated an immeasurable amount of inspiration, collaboration, and solidarity within the communities it has touched. Activate is an experiment in public space- what happens when a community is the primary voice that defines what happens within a neighborhood? By allowing anyone to host their event for free in a previously underutilized lot in the heart of San Francisco, residents are empowered to share their passions and in doing so re-claim the space around them.
