At the heart of my work lies a deep commitment to hope, justice, and freedom. As a strategic leader, I advocate for economic justice, narrative change, and uplifting underserved communities. My journey began as the daughter of a formerly incarcerated mother, influencing my passion and drive to transform the criminal legal system and champion the voices of those most affected by it.This personal connection fueled early pro-bono efforts as a corporate attorney, where I secured the release of numerous individuals unjustly sentenced under federal drug laws, including seven clients who received executive clemency from President Barack Obama. I co-founded the Buried Alive Project alongside two of my clients, Sharanda Jones and Corey Jacobs, who had been granted clemency by Obama. At Buried Alive, we've provided thousands of hours in pro bono legal services and secured the release of more than 65 individuals from life sentences under draconian federal drug laws. Additionally, I founded Girls Embracing Mothers, empowering thousands of women and girls impacted by maternal incarceration. GEM has become a nationally recognized organization, addressing the needs of one of the most least visible populations of children. As an attorney, social entrepreneur, and best-selling author of A Knock at Midnight: A Story of Hope, Justice, and Freedom, my work has been recognized as a beacon of hope and transformation. A Knock at Midnight was chosen as an NAACP Image Award nominee and Los Angeles Times Book Prize Finalist, and was named the #1 Best Book of 2020 by Amazon Editors. My TED Talk titled, “The creativity, innovation and ingenuity languishing in US prisons," has reached over 1.7 million views, bringing creative and innovative solutions to the forefront of criminal justice reform. With over 15 years of experience blending corporate expertise and public interest advocacy, my background as a Certified Public Accountant at PwC and a corporate attorney specializing in mergers & acquisitions at ORIX USA Corporation equips me with a unique perspective. I hold a JD from SMU’s Dedman School of Law, where I was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2024. In 2023, Southern Methodist University recognized me with the Emerging Leader Award. Additionally, I have earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Accounting.
