My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that art experiences should be available to everyone. These views formed as a graduate assistant for students of Diversity in the Arts seminars, where privilege and prejudice were explored through the lens of contemporary artists’ reactions to race in the US. As a former museum educator I used galleries as an instructional space, where difficult issues were discussed through works of art created by artists with varied perspectives. Exposure to different cultures, through travel and teaching abroad, has honed my communication skills with people from all backgrounds; professionally I apply this to daily interactions with middle school artists to promote tolerance in multiple perspectives. The art classroom is a place to integrate subjects, therefore, literature, math, history and science make common appearances in my curriculum. I believe that student voice is just as important, each lesson focuses on aspects of the individual making the work of art.
