Apart from an extremely well executed and complex project and a well written thesis, I like to stress the following three main qualities.
1. The thesis of Britt addresses an under-researched yet extremely relevant topic. The emergence of micro-finance has occurred quite rapidly over the last decade and some research has begun to shed light on how effective this form of economic development and support can be. However, the rapid spread of micro-financing has received little research attention. Britt’s decision to study the topic in the field, and conduct an extensive series of in-depth interviews, is unique and has provided her the opportunity to make a real contribution with her thesis.
2. Conducting qualitative research and distilling insightful ideas and theory from it is an extremely challenging task. This task is potentially even more complicated in remote areas. Britt was able to develop a series of interviews with diverse stakeholders in an extremely remote area of Kenya in the neighborhood of Nairobi. Apart from doing this difficult field work, Britt has been able to conduct top level qualitative work by identifying key themes, concepts and cause-effect relationships that truly help to build theory. Her series of propositions and conceptual model is both interesting and relevant. Considering the abundant amount of information she collected, perhaps the most remarkable quality of her work is that she was able to do such a good job in making sense of it and highlighting interesting and relevant features. It helped her to develop theory in an area where theory is nearly nonexistent.
3. The level of thoroughness of Britt’s work is clear from her thesis. Besides transcribing all interviews and clear positioning of her work in the emerging and diverse literature, the conceptual development is well developed with strong arguments. Moreover, I want to stress that her thoroughness also became clear from seeing the revisions of her thesis and the extent to which she used feedback and new insights throughout the process.
Apart from the high quality thesis work she conducted, I would like to add that Britt is just a very nice person to work with, and that I particularly enjoyed her Skype calls from Kenya!
