Beyond my aspirations as a mechanical engineer, I have always aimed to be a driving force for changein my community. In stark contrast to Yale University, my hometown is much less affluent, and in highschool, I was surrounded by those who dream to be as privileged as I am. I have compassion and driveto improve the quality of life for the community of my childhood. In my entire high school career, I wasengaged in community service to help provide the best opportunities for the young people in ourcommunity. I was successful in science, music, and sports and was often touted as an example foryounger kids. In high school, I started giving kids school-sponsored PSAT tutoring so I could helpothers find their own success stories. Moreover, to further reinvigorate my community, I volunteeredat the Dallas Habitat for Humanity(our local discount store), mentored young band students in themiddle school program, coached younger kids on my baseball team, and volunteered at my localchurch.There were times I was almost overwhelmed by these self-imposed responsibilities. I wasable to refocus by remembering my blessings and opportunities. I have deep faith in the creator of theuniverse and as a scientist, I know that it takes all of us to build the world we seek. God has given mean opportunity through the rigors of research and personal development to improve the quality of lifeon this Earth.
