I believe in Aged Care as a specialty. The strength of multidisciplinary Aged Care teams are their diverse skills, willingness to collaborate and their compassion. These teams are dedicated to caring for people living with high illness burden and complex life limiting illnesses. I commend and celebrate our Aged Care Clinicians who often do not realise how skilled they are, and how they are indeed specialists in their field. These clinicians work with people who have trauma history and some who through diversity may be extremely marginalised. People in their care are commonly physically, cognitively, spiritually, socially and financially disadvantaged. Aged Care Clinicians have to be skilled in all areas, including delivering palliative and end of life care, providing comfort and support to those in their care, their families and their loved ones. My role with PACOP continues to add to the specialty of Aged Care, focusing on enhancing the general palliative skills of Aged Care Teams. PACOP provides a framework and processes to enable general palliative care to become embedded into daily routine and part of core care delivery in Aged Care Homes.
