My role was General Manager Commercial for BlueScope’s largest business unit being BlueScope Australia and New Zealand.BlueScope Australia and New Zealand employed nearly 9,000 employees at more than 50 facilities in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Vanuatu and New Caledonia, and nearly 100 distribution centres in Australia. The business also incorporates a low-cost iron sands mining business and a pipe and tube manufacturer and distributor. Turnover for this division was circa A$6 billion and it had an annual capital budget of A$300 millionIn my role as General Manager - Commercial I was responsible for the finance, raw material procurement, utilities procurement, legal and strategy development functions within the BlueScope ANZ business.

Furthermore, I was responsible for the development of strategic roadmaps, monitoring execution and reporting progress in respect of these roadmaps.

Fonterra is New Zealand’s largest company and the largest exporter of dairy product in the world.Fonterra’s Ingredients business in Australia employed approximately 1000 people across 9 locations and had a turnover of A$1.5 billion. It served both domestic and export ingredients customers and produced bulk, food service and retail formats, the latter for the domestic brands business. The ingredients business procured all required milk in Australia through 1,300 farmer suppliers.As CFO of the ingredients business I was responsible for providing strong commercial support to the Manufacturing, Logistics, Sales, S&OP, Quality and Technical, Sustainability and Milk Procurement functions as well as maintaining a strong control environment across the business. I also had responsibility for a shared service costing function for the Ingredients and Brands businesses in Australia, which, collectively had circa A$3 billion in turnover and in the order of 1,500 SKU’s.

Cargill is a US Multinational with 150,000 staff in 65 countries. I was one of the Asia Pacific Leads and in that capacity I was required to perform fiduciary, business partnering and people process roles to achieve corporate, functional, platform and business unit strategic objectives. Lead Controllers provided leadership and direction related to fiduciary duties performed at the business unit, shared service or legal entity levels and they were an extension of the Corporate Controller’s enterprise departments being Global Tax, Global Financial Reporting and Global Financial Solutions. Specifically, I was assigned geographically to Australia/NZ and Malaysia. Functionally I was responsible for Corporate Financial Reporting for the Asia Pacific Region and for providing financial support for the shared service functions in Singapore and for the regional shared service functions. These shared service functions include human resources, information technology, public relations, engineering, office services and regional management. From a business unit perspective I acted as the lead finance person for Cargill’s World Trading Unit (Asia Pacific only) where we had operations in Indonesia, Pakistan, Malaysia and Singapore. Furthermore, given Cargill’s planned growth I headed up a regional finance centre of expertise on mergers and acquisitions. In that capacity I was responsible for assessing the capability of finance people who will act as process leaders in M&A transactions and for providing guidance and support to such people on Cargill’s process and approval requirements. On some transactions I became involved as a deal practitioner and/or I assisted in integration processes.
