Emergency Department

This position was within the Surgical and Medical Acute Care Research (SMACR) program, which encompassed Trauma, Critical Care, Emergency General Surgery, and Emergency Medicine. Research activities took place in a busy level 1 Trauma Center with an Emergency Department that provides care for more than 73,000 patient visits annually.Emergency Medicine projects included prospective clinical trials in the use of opioids for pain, antibiotics use for otitis media, as well as trials in patients that experienced strokes, head injuries, seizures, and anaphylaxis. Additional retrospective projects covered a broad range of issues representative of the Emergency Medicine environment. Trauma Surgery projects included topics such as trauma induced coagulopathy, blood product use, and outcomes in emergency general surgery.For this program, I helped abstract data from medical records, gathered and entered research data into databases, screened potential research participants for eligibility, organized and completed research documents, and assisted in the day to day operation of clinical research studies. I had patient contact to gather medical histories and collected patient information from study participants. Through this program, I gained experience in clinical research, as well as have exposure to patient care in the Emergency Medicine, Trauma Surgery, and Critical Care environments.
