Graduate Research Assistant

I developed new materials to detect and identify different radioactive isotopes at border security checkpoints around the country. My primary research area was glass-ceramic scintillators and phosphor powders. I formulated new glass compositions, optimized processing techniques and heat treatments, and performed all optical, thermal, and structural characterization. In my designs, I ensured that the ceramics could not only identify isotopes, but also that the of processing methods could be scaled to produce the large panels needed for border security screening systems. In addition to glass-ceramic scintillators, I developed new compositions for phosphor powders to be used in plastic scintillators and other photonics applications. I synthesized the nanophosphor powders using precipitation synthesis followed by encapsulation in transparent polymer matrix. As with the glass-ceramics, I worked with the phosphors from synthesis to scintillator fabrication to final optical characterization and measurement.I developed experienced in an array of materials characterization techniques, and can build a comprehensive picture of a material's mechanical, optical, thermal, and chemical properties. The most common techniques that I employed were differential thermal analysis (DTA), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), dilatometry, electron and optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence excitation (PLE) and emission (PL), transmission / absorption, particle size analysis, and gamma-ray spectroscopy.

In my undergraduate work, I primarily used inorganic chemistry to synthesize new materials. I helped create composite scintillators that are used to detect and identify radioactive material. I contributed primarily to phosphor-loaded polymer composites. I conducted materials selection studies to identify polymers with the required thermal and mechanical properties that could also be index matched with inorganic, nano-scale phosphor powder to produce a transparent scintillator. I synthesized and characterized the phosphors and tested them with multiple polymer matrices. I drafted journal manuscripts, conference proceedings, and sponsor reports.
