As a member of The John Howard Society, my role focused on reducing the impact of crime and its causes through the delivery of relevant programs. In this capacity, I was responsible for providing ongoing counselling and case management services, as well as supporting the Maple Keys Section 23 classroom, which provided a unique and alternative learning environment for at-risk youth. I worked to identify and assess the needs of youth, providing services through relevant technology and other outlets, both in individual and group settings.Additionally, I worked closely with the Manager of Youth Services to ensure all funder reports were completed accurately and in a timely manner. I also referred individuals in need of other specialized services internally within the John Howard Society and externally within the community. I delivered services in a way that reflected the racial, cultural, linguistic, and gender-specific needs of the community being served. I also participated in agency/staff committees as mandated, assisted the agency in maintaining accessible, relevant, responsive, and quality services, and ensured that services delivered were efficient and effective through an outcome evaluation model.In this role, I developed a broad range of skills, including counselling, case management, program development, outreach, and report writing.

As a Youth Counsellor in the Skills Training for Employment and Post-Secondary (STEP) program, I worked with youth who faced complex barriers to employment, including those involved in the criminal justice system, with disabilities, recent immigrants, Indigenous youth, and those not in employment, education, or training. My goal was to help these youth achieve long-term employment, meaningful careers, further education or vocational opportunities, and success in their future working lives.In this role, I provided service user support, including determining youth eligibility and suitability for the program, conducting participant intake and assessment, and developing action plans based on their employment and employability needs and career goals. I also provided case management and general support, mentoring activities that support the development of interpersonal and relationship-building skills, and delivered relevant and current workshops that support life stability, fundamental job readiness skills, career development/exploration, personal management skills, job attainment skills, employment-related skills, and job maintenance and career advancement skills.In addition, I implemented job coaching and job retention strategies, maintained up-to-date case notes, progress reports, and client files, and liaised with other Employment and Training staff to ensure coordination of services and utilization of available resources. I also provided education and work transition support to bridge the transition from the program to employment or further education and made referrals to community agencies as deemed appropriate.Overall, my experience in this role has given me a deep understanding of the diverse racial, ethnic, disabled, sexual orientation, and cultural populations of youth, as well as a passion for promoting education and skills training as being foundational to labor market participation.
