About Brooke Schlyer

My first taste of broadcast television came while at Hillcrest Orchards in Michigan picking apples with my grandparents, sister and cousin. While my grandpa talked to the reporter about continuing the family tradition, I climbed up the tree and made a clearing in the branches for my close up.About a month after graduating high school, I packed up my Ford Escort and hit the road for college at San Diego State University. I made the most of every moment by interning, taking part in a mentorship with a Lifestyle Correspondent in L.A., writing for the school newspaper, and immersing myself in the southern California culture. One America News Network offered me my first television job as a news writer. I quickly worked my way up to producer and would come in hours before my shifts to practice anchoring in the studio. I put together a reel and became a fill-in anchor eventually landing my own spot every Sunday morning. Currently, I'm WSIL's Morning LIVE Reporter where I plan and schedule segments with local business owners and community leaders. On fun days, I cover everything from fundraisers for animal shelters, upcoming plays/concerts, and festivals to touring local restaurants, wineries and breweries. I've also done several LIVE interviews on the season opening of water parks, peach orchards and pumpkin patches. On more serious days, I could be at the site of a car crash, fire, showing severe weather impacts, or giving an update on election results. During the weekends, I'm the evening anchor, producer and person responsible for web/social media, which can mean writing breaking news while I'm at the desk with minutes to go before the show's start. The story that I'm most proud of started when a high school student got a gun off the bus, and I was the reporter to break his identity. At that time, he told me he wanted to make a better world for his unborn child. Six months later, his life was taken away to gun violence and a few weeks later his daughter was born. I patiently waited to talk to his girlfriend and had an exclusive interview with her a year after his death about the tragedy and raising their daughter as a single mother.
