I educate, problem solve, and celebrate all student successes. My experience has taught me the following about myself:I provide solid reading instruction, moving students from below level to at or above:- After my son was diagnosed as dyslexic, I became certified in an Orton-Gillingham method, taught my children to read, and began tutoring other struggling students- I isolate struggles students may have- I build a love of reading through teaching word recognition and language comprehensionMath is beautiful:- I create a growth mindset- I believe in each child's ability- I patiently remediate and challenge a student's understanding The sciences are astounding:- I retain my own curiosity and continue learning- I make messes and inspire inquiry- I love to let kids get their hands and minds right into projectsEnrichment is a core subject:- All subjects matter and I include them- I provide enjoyable arts integrationWorking with students of many backgrounds:- I adjust for and stretch students with various attention capabilities- I enjoy students who may have frustrating relationships with others in their lives- I learn about my students and build relationships- I an enthusiastic about kids respecting each other, helping each other, and feeling safeI am a strong communicator with parents.- I value each child as a whole person- Parents know I love their child- I team with parents to build student skillsEffective collaboration:- Gaining ideas and thoughts from others helps me in my work- I love to chat about education- My own growth mindset makes me able to adjust when a new approach is neededAs a former home educator, I was forced to examine my educational philosophy early on:- Educating my own five children from Kindergarten-8th grade, I had to differentiate instruction and choose the approach I most wanted for my very own children- I fell in love with the educational philosopher Charlotte Mason- My five children all still love me (most days!)
