Mister Rogers always said that when things get scary, we should look for the helpers.After a childhood filled with trauma, I was adopted at age seven, and I decided that I didn't just want to look for the helpers; I wanted to be one. I spent my adolescence being a voice for the voiceless. I stood up against bullies, and wrote research papers advocating for women's rights. The more I learned, the more driven I was to fight for those who had experienced injustice.My spark was extinguished when I fell victim to trauma that I carried from my childhood.After five years in an abusive marriage, I got divorced and became a single mother. Living at home with my parents, working entry level jobs, I decided to go back to college. I chose to study English, Critical Theory, and Creative writing in order to develop the skills needed to tell my story.Through my education, I rediscovered my passion for social justice. I researched, wrote, and presented projects about human rights, women’s rights, and the history of oppression stemming from skewed beliefs of superiority.My degree in English helped me better understand research, analysis, critical theory, and how changing society relies heavily on understanding the past. I decided to continue my education with a master’s degree in public relations to further enhance my aspiration of a career in advocacy.As a former foster youth, a domestic violence victim, past struggles with drug abuse, and being a single mother, I can relate to hardships. As a first-generation college graduate, awarded, honored, and recognized for my hard work, I have overcome the odds.Now, I aspire to advocate for others to be able to overcome theirs too.
