I am an Indigenous 2L law student at the Lincoln Alexander School of Law at Toronto Metropolitan University. This is a new law program and I will be a part of the second graduating class in 2024. The law program is truly forward-thinking and aims to create a new type of lawyer. While we study traditional law, Lincoln Alexander teaches legal education through diversity, innovation, technology, and the need-for-change. I am proud to be a part of a new type of law school and am continually excited about the important topics we cover in this program. Before I was a law student, I was a Commerce student at Smith School of Business (Queen's University) and focused on various areas of business, including Accounting, Internal Audit, Finance, Banking, and Marketing. Throughout my Commerce degree, I was able to learn in a traditional environment which helped me understand the "business world". I participated in an exchange program and was able to attend the Louvain School of Management in Belgium for a semester, in which I was able to immerse myself into a new, exciting culture.Ouside of Smith, I was able to work two Bay Street summer internships with RBC in Investment and Treasury Services (I&TS) and in Internal Audit. These valuable, hands-on experiences and my leadership skills lead me to a management job in Summer 2021. I worked as a Census Crew Leader as a part of the 2021 Canadian Census. This job gave me a plethora of not only leadership and management experience but life experience as well. Census work is divided into regions and has a hierarchical approach to not only collect household data from 98% of Canadian homes but to ensure appropriate checks are done for the highest quality of the collection. This work experience was a mix of managing a team of 18 Enumerators who worked in the field, going door-to-door in my District, delegating work to an assistant, and communicating with my manager remotely. My job was an experience like no other and I am truly grateful for the problem-solving and management experiences I gained! There were many unpredictable, long days, but I was able to keep my team happy and engaged throughout the collection period. Moving forward, I am hoping to work at a forward-thinking law firm that values Indigenous rights, diversity, creativity, innovation, and employee wellbeing!
