Brooks was born and raised in Texas. He has worked in the employee benefit world since age 22 and has seen the good, the bad, and the ugly. Brooks has published numerous papers and articles, lectured at major universities, spoken at various employee benefit seminars in the United States and Europe, and appeared on "60 Minutes," PBS Frontline and many other TV programs.Brooks earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Houston, completed post-graduate work in computer science at the University of North Carolina, and then received his Doctor of Law (J.D.) from Southern Methodist University. Brooks was a partner in a major Dallas law firm before forming a company that would use computers to assimilate, manipulate and disseminate retirement benefit data. The company grew to include over twenty employees in Texas and California, providing employee benefit computer services to major financial institutions and corporate users. In the late 1970s he sold the company to resume a legal and consulting practice limited to corporate employee benefits and ERISA fiduciary standards. He frequently consults with major companies on special projects and has worked all over the U.S. as well as several countries in Western Europe. Most retirement gurus approach corporate employee benefits with a narrow view dominated by their field of expertise. Because of his law degree and business experiences, Brooks has gained knowledge in many diverse disciplines relating to employee benefits: law, economics, insurance, finance, computer science, history and politics. Einstein has said "…Imagination is more important than knowledge." Brooks' education, experience and imagination have allowed him to think outside the box for both practical and innovative solutions of retirement issues. One of those ideas, conceived and implemented many years before others starting copying, was "putting your 401(k) plan on autopilot" in order to minimize poor decisions by novice employeesBrooks has recently written an e-Book to help people do a better job preparing for retirement. You can buy the book, DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS OF YOUR 401(K), at the Kindle Store on Amazon.
