Consultant & Grant Writer
Self employed, specializing in grant procurement consulting, grant budgeting, grant research, and grant writing for local/regional non-profits and colleges and universities. Additional consultation in organizational leadership and non-profit fundraising.
Assistant Director
Program management, grant writing, grant administration and higher education policy implementation.Best memory: I basically started off at a desk job as a researcher, but eventually ended up working directly for the department Director. I attended every high-level meeting in his place that the Director could not attend. I traveled the state and the country, met with some amazing people, all of whom care deeply about higher education in America, and administered multiple programs that represented several million dollar projects which reached all corners of the state. The toughest part about ADHE was saying goodbye.
Fellow
During my masters program at VCU, I learned about and participated in bond financing for local government entities, strategic planning, event planning, and legislative/policy implementation.Best memory: The staff took small magnetic, building-block sets (VRA-logoed) to legislators and their staff during the session. I met some of the nicest people doing that and also got to speak with nearly every Virginia legislator or their senior staff person. They all got a kick out of the building set.
Jr. Policy Analyst
During my masters program at VCU, I worked alongside Sr. Policy Analyst in the review of and implementation of transportation-related policy for the state of Virginia. I also worked as an event planner for VDOT's annual, state-wide transportation conference.Best memory: Leaving. Sorry, there were some amazing people and some not-so-amazing people at VDOT. I have come to learn that people make all the difference. The best jobs I have ever had were the ones where people worked as a team and were genuinely nice to each other.
Network Administrator
Monitored and maintained inter-site network communications; assisted in new system implementations; documented software applications and policies; support of various applications, hardware, vendors and related systems; software testing and integration; maintained desktop and server hardware/software; collaborated with staff to implement policies and ensure proper allocation of network and application resources; primary instructor for employee computer and software training program; taught both in class settings and on an individual basis; organized and prepared instruction manuals for new and existing employees.Best memory: One of the for-profit hospitals I worked in was a beautiful place. I mean, wow! I was super-impressed.
Network Analyst
Responsibilities included the installation, support and maintenance of over 2,500 computers (Windows 9x, 2000, and XP), servers (Novell Netware 4x, 5x, Windows NT4, 2000, and 2003) and related systems on a Wide Area Network (WAN); worked closely with staff through the integration of software and hardware, pinpointing technological benefits; acquired an intimate knowledge of practices and procedures of a health care system; the integration of information needs of systems with newly available technology; training, monitoring systems, ascertaining, presenting and marketing future needs of the system in order to best improve efficiency, provide information, and forecast for the future.Best memory: Arguing with colleagues and my boss about how to do things. I was usually wrong, but it was a learning and growing experience. They showed me a lot of grace.
Intern
Intern for the Information Systems Division: Primary responsibility was to assist and learn from Senior Network Analysts; assisted in the "Y2K" project; specialized in software and hardware upgrades to desktop workstations; instructed on LAN/WAN implementation and operation.Best memory: Staying up past midnight new year's eve, 1999, in the data center for the Y2K project. Nothing happened. It was a bit of a letdown, but turned out to be a fun experience. Nothing beats the people at Baptist Health.
Intern
Intern for Sen. Dale Bumpers, attended and produced reports on committee hearings; evaluated constituent mail; composed letters on behalf of the Senator; responded to telephone inquiries; archived files, bills and resolutions.Best memory: This was Sen. Bumpers final year in Congress, and a few of us were asked to start going through all of his papers and archives to get them ready to be housed somewhere else. The work took place in a fenced-off area in the attic (literal attic) of one of the congressional office buildings. It was the middle of summer, crazy hot, but something that few congressional interns ever got to do. It was a true honor.
