I’ve done this time and again, opening new markets/geographies and deftly navigating different business environments and cultures.At OC Tanner, I began with Europe, adopting a growth-through-acquisition strategy that allowed OCT to quickly gain market share and capture double-digit YoY growth. Both acquisitions needed work; one had lost money for 2 years and needed overhaul, and the other had non-strategic businesses requiring divestment or closure.Next, I tackled India (employee #1 leading a full buildout), followed by another acquisition turnaround in Australia. I also spearheaded growth initiatives in the greater Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and Latin America.In both build-from-scratch and turnaround mode, I devised playbooks that were half procedural and half Wild West. Crafting a cohesive vision and strategy is paramount, but it’s the execution where one’s leadership mettle is forged.
