I am a professional higher education administrator with expertise in many areas, including: proposal writing, budgeting and fiscal administration, hiring and supervising international students and scholars, grant management, conference organization, event planning, and school and community outreach. My main interests are in international, cross-cultural, and foreign language education. I also enjoy working as a freelance copyeditor of scholarly monographs, academic journals, dissertations, newsletters and even webnovels. My work at the University at Buffalo became exclusively China-focused when I moved from the Asian Studies Program to the Confucius Institute in early 2015. The UB Confucius Institute sponsored a very ambitious program of research, teaching, and cultural events to promote learning about China at UB and in Buffalo. This highly impactful institute was forced to close in late 2021 due to federal government pressure, which was based primarily on congressional misunderstanding of the nature of U.S. Confucius Institutes' relationships with their Chinese partners. The past several years have not been easy for Americans of all backgrounds who maintain ties with Chinese friends, colleagues and institutions.In fall 2022, I began a new role at UB as assistant director of the Asia Research Institute. ARI maintains an exciting and ambitious agenda of conferences, lectures, performances, funding opportunities for faculty and students, and student exchange programs. I am constantly learning and seeing other cultures and experiences in new ways thanks to the terrific UB faculty, students, and guests we are able to bring to campus. Student enthusiasm and engagement in Asia-related research, learning, intellectual exchange and cross-cultural engagement is particularly rewarding.
