Full Professor of Stage Design, Department of Theatre, UNC Charlotte, served as Faculty Ombuds & University Mediation Coordinator (2009-19). Previously, Chair/Artistic Director, Department of Dance and Theatre, UNC Charlotte. Thirty years in the performing arts industry, designing scenery and lights for dozens of university and regional theatre productions and taught graduate and undergraduate courses in set and lighting design and computer-aided design for the stage. Producer and/or Artistic Director for more than thirty productions. His presentations have been seen throughout the U.S. and in Canada for the U.S. Institute for Theatre Technology and he was the recipient of the U.S.I.T.T. research fellowship to facilitate study of the History of Light: Philosophy, Science and Aesthetics. In 2016 co-edited v2, Practical Projects for Teaching Lighting Design: A Compendium published by USITT.Some of his favorite design work has been for the nationally renowned Williamstown Theatre Festival where his lighting designs include: Golden Boy, directed by Joanne Woodward, the world premiere of The Lucky Spot, by Beth Henley, and Autumn Elegy featuring E.G. Marshall. Seventeen lighting designs for the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, including the critically acclaimed A Streetcar Named Desire directed by Artistic Director, Bonnie J. Monte. Other professional credits include lighting designs for the Richmond Ballet; Heritage Repertory Theatre at the University of Virginia; and the University of South Carolina. He designed scenery for the documentary film, What Farocki Taught, selected for the Whitney Museum's Biennial 2000 in NYC—a commemoration of artists whose works the curators feel reflect the best of what has happened in contemporary art during the last two years. Prior to UNC Charlotte, he was a member of the faculty of the University of Notre Dame where he served as Director of Theatre and Associate Chair of the Department of Film, Television, and Theatre.
