Law 4000 Course Description: This mandatory first semester course begins with an introduction to the role of law in U.S. society, the basic structure of the U.S. legal system and U.S. legal institutions, the principles of separation of powers and federalism, Legal English, admission to the legal profession, and the various professional roles which lawyers play in the justice system. The course will also provide a high-level overview of the United States Legal Practice certificate courses and how those subjects are tested on the bar exam. Finally, the course will provide an introduction to online resources available to students (including online legal research databases, such as Lexis and Westlaw, and online library resources) as well as an introduction to critical reading, critical reasoning, legal analysis and writing methods.Management 201 Course Description: Survey of the legal environment in which businesses operates. Includes overview of legal system and judicial processes and coverage of constitutional principles for U.S. legal system, ways to resolve legal disputes, forms of business organization, legal issues relevant to employment, legal responsibility of businesses to clients and customers, and liability issues.

As Assistant University Counsel, I work across University departments on a wide-range of legal and compliance topics. I Chair of the University Policy Coordinating Committee (UPCC), which serves as an advisory group to the President and the President's Council on all matters related to policies. The UPCC reviews all existing University policies, develops new policies by performing analysis of federal, state, and local law, as well as benchmarking measurements to ensure policies reflect best practices. Clerking allowed me to obtain and strengthen specific skills with broad applicability. For example, in domestic relations law, emotions are high and tempers can dictate a clients thought process. As a result, I remained levelheaded in crises and maintained an objective eye on the situation. Divorce proceedings results in the review of a wide-range set of documentation. Specifically, I analyzed: tax returns, net worth statements, retirement plan summaries, real estate valuations, prenuptial agreements, insurance information, bank accounts, and stocks, bonds, and brokerage accounts. I would analyze these documents, collect evidence, and conduct research in drafting motions on behalf of our clients. For the firm's cases, I drafted discovery documents such as: interrogatories, production of documents, subpoenas, admissions, etc. In addition, I drafted a plethora of motions before the district and appellate court including: an appellate brief, separation agreements, spousal/child support, and alteration in parenting time allocations.Working in a small firm sharpened my communication skills in several ways, particularly: 1. corresponding and negotiating with an opposing side; and 2. providing service to clients by conducting interviews, answering questions, and fielding concerns.

I individually handled a prosecution of a federal misdemeanor, beginning to end, gaining valuable experience presenting in federal court using a Certification as a Legal Intern through the Ohio Supreme Court. In preparation I interviewed the witnesses, prepped the witnesses for testimony, and presented in court.On another case I defended a federal discrimination claim by drafting a Rule 56 Motion for Summary Judgment. In addition, I assisted U.S. Attorneys on cases by performing research for indictments and investigations and drafted motions and memorandums for civil and criminal pending cases.
