Born in Consett, County Durham in 1936 Bruce painted & drew from a young age & attended the Oswald Bage School of Drawing in Blackhill (a drawing club for children run by local artist Ossie Bage) for some formative years. He went to Consett Grammar School & gained an ‘O’ level in art!. This was his only formal art training. Switching to science in the sixth form he pursued a scientific career, training at Birmingham University for a BSc and then a PhD in Medical Biochemistry . After research at Aberdeen University he came as junior lecturer to Newcastle University until 1967. From 1967–1970 he taught Pharmacology at The Christian Medical College in Ludhiana, North India. From there he moved to Loughborough as Head of Drug Metabolism in what was then Fisons Pharmaceuticals Research Laboratories. He held various posts in Fisons including two years in Rochester New York.He published onebook –‘An introduction to Pharmacokinetics’ in collaboration with Dr Dennis Smith. Now out of print this small book was used extensively by medical students and pharmacy students. A PDF version (3.2 mb) can be sent to you free of charge until the end of 2014 if you contact me. He retired worn out in 1995! He now lives in Stanhope with his lifelong companion and wife, Wendy.During these years painting was always a hobby.He now paints extensively.He is a founder member of the Charnwood Drawing and Painting Club in Loughborough, a member of the Wells (Norfolk) art club and in 2009 started the Stanhope Fusion art club.His painting reflects his Christian faith since he finds inspiration in the beauty of colour, light and the created world. He hopes that his paintings give pleasure to viewers. Out of sales he supports the tax man, the needs of fellow artists, framing and materials, and charities. He supports a Christian charity, Faith in Action on a regular basis.You may see him on a bicycle on the C2C route, or taking & playing for services in the West Durham Methodist Circuit.
