Bruce is a pioneer in the field of sustainable impact planning and wealth management, with particular expertise in shareholder engagement and advocacy on behalf of institutions and individuals who seek to align their mission or values with investments.Bruce began his career at Merrill Lynch, and developed a focus on responsible investment in 1986 when the movement was in its nascent stages. In 1994 he co-founded and was first Director of the NW Coalition for Responsible Investment, and also served on the national Governing Board of ICCR (the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility). ICCR is a seminal player in the corporate responsibility movement, whose members control more than $400 billion AUM. ICCR is responsible for the first social shareholder proposal filed with GM, and for creating the South African Divestiture Movement. For more than a quarter century, Newground Social Investment has been well-known for its ESG-SRI money management, and we stand out for our shareholder engagement on a variety of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues. Newground was the nation's 1st Social Purpose Corporation, and the 2nd money manager to focus exclusively on ESG-SRI impact investing. We've enjoyed a number of important shareholder engagement successes over the decades, including: • Our resolution at Plum Creek Timber (now Weyerhaeuser) received the highest vote of any ESG proposal submitted, on any topic, that year: 56.2%. • Another resolution transformed how McDonald's uses pesticides, leading to a global reduction in pesticide use (see video linked below). • Another proposal saved the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge from a 50-year-long DuPont strip mining operation. • We are the shareholders responsible for Starbucks launching its first Fair Trade coffees. In all, the opportunity to transform corporate behavior comes from the willingness to engage, to discuss, and to negotiate – skills we are particularly well trained in.
