I work on fossil power projects for the World Bank. Current assignments are coal fired plants in Botswana (4x150 MW CFBC), S. Africa (6x800 MW PC fired super-critical), Indonesia (analysis of 100 fossil Utility plants, performance based regulation project with heat rate and availability target analysis), Egypt (3x600 MW super-critical heavy oil/gas fired new project tender evaluation and specification review) and Bangladesh (120 MWe gas fired simple to combined cycle retrofit with upgrades to existing and re-purposed steam turbine, generator, and other plant scope). A recent new project is a power options study for Kosovo (coal, oil, gas, and renewable options evaluation).

I do engineering consulting for various Legal firms working on power plant litigation cases. I supply engineering advice and expert witness reports as required. I am also available to provide court testimony as may be required. Past cases have involved litigation and testimony on large fossil fired utility boilers in the USA (coal fired, super-critical) and asbestos testimony.

I am an independent Consulting Mechanical Engineer specializing in fossil boilers of all sizes from package to large ultra-super-critical Utility boilers. Proficiency areas include new boiler and equipment selection/optimization, proposal and specification writing and evaluations, plant upgrades, fuel changes, biomass co-firing, efficiency upgrades, and root cause problem analysis and solutions. I have both domestic and International experience as well as design and sales/commercial experience all in a 50/50% mix over my career. Many times a "fresh forest for the trees" approach is possible with an independent analysis. I also work with Insurance and Legal firms to prepare expert witness reports and serve testimony.

I work with S&L Engineers on various power plant projects. I supply custom and specialty engineering studies, field inspections, and plant optimization and problem analysis investigations to augment and support S&L projects. Project examples include biomass conversion studies, Coal (PC and FBC) boiler design analysis, boiler/plant efficiency reviews, HRSG inspections and project support, boiler specification writing and reviews, Owner's Engineer support, and various specialty fuel conversions and field test plan writing and site support. Typical and recent projects have been located in USA, Canada, India, Philippines, Mexico, China, Mozambique, Indonesia, Mongolia, and Kenya.

As an Area Mgr. at B&W, I had responsibility for my assigned Countries to market and sell B&W products and Service (aftermarket and new OEM). I learned that effective relationships and "the sale" is best approached by first understanding and helping the Customers with their plant problems and issues/needs. This builds technical confidence first and later strong trust and affinity. The "sale" was really the mutual co-operative relationship that finally resulted. The "equipment sale" was the second bonus. That was my philosophy and it worked well. As an Area Mgr., I learned that you first have to earn your credence. I have a saying in "sales work" that I learned from my experience: "You get "in" technically, and "out" commercially, but the real "sale" is staying "in" from the trusted relationships you both nurture and build".
