I represent people in civil litigation involving civil rights and land use law. Martindale-Hubbell has rated me AV since 1994. I practiced law for 20 years in “Big Law” firms and, before that, in my firm. I am back to practicing in my firm, where I enjoy the independence it provides. I maintain an active pro bono caseload, emphasizing cases where private or governmental actions have hurt marginalized people and other cases with extraordinary circumstances. Some of these cases are controversial, including one featured on the CBS national news program 60 Minutes. I embrace the most challenging cases. I love the practice of law. I am also a suicide prevention advocate and keynote speaker (at no charge) who is determined to prevent suicide. Additionally, I am a survivor of attempted suicide in 2023. I suffered from untreated depression since I was a little boy, but I never discussed my mental health problems with anyone. It would have been too “unmanly”. I also did not want to be labeled mentally ill. I could not accept such a stigma. So, I suffered in silence and masked my mental illness as best I could. I now realize I suffered needlessly. Please learn from my mistakes and not your own. For more than 30 years, I lived with a plan to kill myself should the right triggering circumstances ever occur. I was entirely comfortable with self-inflicted death. No one could have better planned or been more purposeful to kill themselves in 2023 than me. I have been to the point of no return; its the darkest, most forbidding place any human can venture. I do not want you going there. Only by the grace of God am I still here to type this narrative.
