After 20 years working in academia as a population geneticist (both human and non-human), I started a second career. High quality scientific research with practical applications is something that drives me but I wanted to move away from a classic academic career path.I returned to the area that inspired me most in my early career (conservation) and now work in environmental policy and policy delivery in the UK. The severe depletion of nature since the 1970s tends to be overshadowed by climate change but is an equally important, interlinked, problem. In the UK we have been particularly badly affected with the lowest woodland cover in Europe and >90% declines in a number of once common birds. Even hedgehogs are under severe threat. It is the recovery of nature within the UK that is my passion.

We genotyped 1M SNPs to detect fine scale population structure within the UK. The follow on collected 3D photographsfrom many of the same volunteeras with the aim of identifying genes underlying facial features. -
