Dr Bruce Choy is a specialist in governance and risk management. He is an independent Board director and leads governance functions for organizations in the financial services and post-secondary education sectors. He is Chair of the Board Risk Committee for Shinhan Bank Canada, a subsidiary of the Korean financial services conglomerate Shinhan Financial Group, and Chair of the Board of Governors for the George Brown College of Applied Arts and Technology. Dr Choy is also an adjunct professor who teaches about risk management, competition and markets, and financial services regulation at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management.Dr Choy has advised C-suites, Boards and the senior leadership on financial and non-financial risk management, corporate governance, strategy, innovation and business transformation. He has extensive global financial services experience from North America, Asia and Australasia, that includes directly operating in all of risk management’s ‘three lines of defense’ (front office business, risk oversight and internal audit), and has partnered with associated government, agency and regulatory authorities around the world.At PwC, Dr Choy was based in North America’s two largest banking centers (New York and Toronto), and as a Partner had led their Canadian risk consulting practice, where he advised on risk management practices and supported audit and assurance engagements for some of the world’s largest banks and financial institutions. Prior, he served with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia in various senior executive positions based in their (Sydney) head-office. This included leading the enterprise balance sheet management team where he guided businesses to adapt to the funding, liquidity and capital conditions following the global financial crisis. He also led the enterprise level market risk function and was a direct report of the Group Chief Risk Officer. Bruce was awarded a doctorate from the University of Sydney (Australia) for his research on the mathematics for risk management. He is a University and R.A.
