The BIOTA Institute supports research on the question of the "origin of life" and "life in the universe" with an emphasis on providing mentorship, grants, and laboratory facilities for students and young scientists. Research emphasis is given to testing the "Hot Spring Hypothesis" for an origin of life developed through the collaboration of Dr. Bruce Damer and Prof. David Deamer. In addition to laboratory and field studies at hot spring analogs around the world, BIOTA considers the implications of its origin scenario for evolutionary biology, computer science, philosophy and the search for life in the universe. BIOTA produces peer-reviewed publications and also supports talks and media such as interviews, documentaries and issues press releases on key discoveries and proposals in the field of Astrobiology.

The Digibarn computer museum was the largest collection of vintage computers and documents in private hands. The majority of the collection has been moved to more secure storage and display at the System Source Computer Museum in Baltimore, MD. The DigiBarn, under Dr. Damer's curatorial direction, focused specifically on personal computers, the birth of the Internet, workstations, early transistor and mechanical computers and calculators, Cray supercomputers, and rare company documents. Another focus of the DigiBarn was to produce an online collection of stories, biographies, and documents from lesser known as well as household name contributors to the digital revolution.

Founder and CEO/President of innovative research and development company focused on cutting edge real-time 3D simulation and virtual community applications for space, industrial training, mining operations, learning games and marketing. DigitalSpace's client list included NASA, Adobe, Raytheon, ESA, Honeybee Robotics, American General Financial Group, numerous universities, and the National Institutes of Health. From 1999-2013 we completed 25 projects in spacecraft and mission simulation and design for NASA and other space industry organizations. Ongoing work since 2013 as a conceptual design group produced a new architecture (SHEPHERD) for asteroid relocation and resource extraction enabling sustainable exploration and habitation of the solar system. Collaborators: Peter Jenniskens of the SETI Institute and Julian Nott of Nott Technologies.

The Contact Consortium (CCON) was the first non-profit community-based organization dedicated to catalyzing the development of Internet multi-user virtual worlds featuring users represented as avatars. CCON carried out experiments to develop this new medium of social contact, community and culture and created, funded and operated a dozen conferences (including the foundational Earth to Avatars 1996), symposia and other events. Some of the first "hybrid" conferences were pioneered by CCON with attendees both in physical space and "in-world" in virtual meeting spaces. CCON also sponsored many other virtual environment applications including learning in 2D and 3D graphical spaces, group building experiments, and the holding of large scale events such as conferences and other social gatherings. CCON had many special interest groups including Biota.org-the digital biology project, VLearn3D.org about learning in and through virtual worlds, and SocioAnthro investigating the sociology and anthropology of multi user graphical worlds.

Engaged with NASA on 25 contracts as a team lead to develop a real time 3D simulation platform for the simulation of space missions. Worked with groups across the agency and aerospace industry on mission design including telerobotic lunar base construction and the first reference design for a crewed mission to an asteroid. Recently co-developed the SHEPHERD asteroid capture and resource utilization spacecraft concept.

Engaged in software consulting for Xerox Corporation and XPLOR International. Supported Xerox Vice President John Lopiano to help the company develop a strategy for creating, archiving and managing electronic documents based on Adobe's Acrobat (PDF) format.

Carried out independent research at IBM Canada's Software Laboratory in Toronto to create a simulator and presentation promoting the concept of optical computing within IBM's research efforts. Presented the concepts at IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center and IBM's Poughkeepsie development center.
