Last position was Asst. Manager for Inventory. Since distribution and inventory was so centralized it really was mostly just a check-in job. But it was built on a new IT network system and was being done very poorly, thought it turned out to be no great secret. I was also the server caretaker. Again mostly just to be there to recover from a power outage, or to update and upgrade with material from central office. I did have to install some new hard drives in the POS machines and trouble shoot those all the time. Ah, yes I also got to update the database for the DB they used for book searches on the floor computers. Fun intro to doing things the UNIX way (unmount and mount that partition!). As an assistant manager I got to supervise the 4 to 5 book sellers to be sure they were stocking and organizing their sections. I would also have to be "floor manager" when scheduled. Being a floor manager in a busy retail situation can be a lot like being a sergeant in combat; fortunately the price for failure or bad decisions is a lot less drastic. Still, it is all thinking very much "on your feet" and is great training for keeping cool under stress.
