  • Ctg Global
    Country Manager - Afghanistan
    Ctg Global Feb 2014 - Dec 2014
    Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Ae
I was responsible for the leadership of a team of local and international staff in one of the most dynamic and interesting business environments on the planet. I enjoyed being able to draw on decades of leadership experience as the country entered an interesting period of its history – the draw-down and departure of the international security community. There are cultural challenges and blessings, a security environment that forces everyone to be on their toes and a business community that has deep commercial and ‘Silk Road’ trading roots. However the business development rules are completely rewritten given that security environment, forcing creative ways of building the business. There is little that is text-book about developing new business here – and that taps my entrepreneurial DNA, start-up experience, ability to function and thrive without direct support and my high tolerance for all sorts of risk.
  • Ctg Global
    Regional Business Development Manager
    Ctg Global Sep 2013 - Dec 2013
    Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Ae
The business development role required me to look at the business operations of the existing enterprise in East Africa (based in Nairobi) and in Central Asia (based in Kabul), explore what might be possible with existing accounts, but especially explore new opportunities. There was a particular focus on Central Asia and the need to quickly understand the business environment and potential in the context of an unsettled Afghanistan as it heads towards a potential period of instability, what with the draw-down of the international security forces and the 2014 elections. The business development ‘brief’ continues into my Country Manager appointment.
  • Executive Solutions Group
    Operations Manager
Executive Solutions Group Feb 2011 - Jul 2013
    Sydney, Au
I worked on a consultancy basis with the ESG team from early 2011, work that complemented my work with SIMaid. ESG is about brand protection, and in particular protecting consumers and brand owners from counterfeit pharmaceuticals. Any work like this in which counterfeit medicines are uncovered, and consumers protected from potential fatal consequences is extremely rewarding. I later served in a more full time capacity with a brief to develop new markets and identify new accounts for the company, in particular in areas not related to the pharmaceutical industry which has traditionally been the core focus of this brand management enterprise. I identified and explored new business opportunities in Singapore, and Laos, supported ongoing accounts in Pakistan and addressed new opportunities in Australia.
  • Simaid
    Operations Manager
    Simaid Jan 2011 - Apr 2013
SIMaid is the Australian aid and development arm of the international faith based mission SIM. It does really fine work in more than 49 countries assisting the poor and dispossessed. I had the privilege of coordinating resources for aid projects across those countries, and in particular the promotion of the organization to the business community. A strong focus of my fundraising strategy was to guide CSR activities to support SIMaid projects. We also successfully engaged local community groups to support specific projects. Those included public schools and church groups but also focused on ethnic community groups supporting projects in their home countries. The Indian community in Australia was quick to support SIMaid projects in India, for example.

  • Royal Australian Air Force
    Imagery Analyst
Royal Australian Air Force Jan 1991 - Mar 1992
    Au
For some of my military life I specialised as an Imagery Analyst (IA). On graduating with a six month IA course under my belt I was posted to 6SQN where I worked with the intel, photographic and aircrew teams supporting the tactical aerial reconnaissance carried out by the RF-111 aircraft. Ironically my IA qualifications meant I was qualified to be posted to this remarkable world but my time at 6SQN was less focused on the technical (I had a team of experts more capable than I at doing imagery analysis) and more on practicing and developing my leadership skills, for which I am very grateful. We were a tight team which produced exceptional results.
  • Australian Department Of Foreign Affairs And Trade
    Desk Officer
Australian Department Of Foreign Affairs And Trade 1992 - 1996
    Barton, Act, Au
I was seconded to the then Strategic Assessments Branch of the Department of Foreign Affairs, with a particular focus on the work of the Australia Group in the UN and its counter WMD agenda. However the nature of DFAT meant that I found myself engaged in a wide range of other activities, including commercial negotiations in Europe on behalf of the Australian Government, supporting our trade and investment interests. It was work that put me in close contact collaboration with our Deputy Attorney General and required direct briefing of our Foreign Minister. It was a 'transformational experience' that sowed the seeds of my interest in business and eventually leaving government service.
  • Jio/Dio
    Desk Officer
    Jio/Dio Nov 1988 - Dec 1990
JIO, and then DIO is Defence's sole strategic-level, all-source intelligence assessment agency. My work was initially in the North Asia Division covering China, Japan and 'the Koreas'. After the JIO/DIO reorganisation I worked in the the SEA Asia Division. The experience here not only included the usual analysis of fast moving events in the region, the 'burden' (and thrill) of being a subject matter expert, briefing the ADF chiefs and our ministers but in particular successfully defending controversial assessments in international forums. Foundational analytical skills honed here continue to be used and drawn upon.
