Current-The Lancet (2017) "U=U is a simple but hugely important campaign based on a solid foundation of scientific evidence."-Dr. Anthony S. Fauci (2019) "U=U is the foundation of being able to end the [HIV] epidemic." -WHO (2020) "With U=U, treatment has transformed the prevention landscape."-PEPFAR (2021) "The idea that someone living with HIV, who is both on treatment and virally undetectable, cannot transmit the virus to a sexual partner is revolutionary."In 2016, Prevention Access Campaign (PAC) created and launched the Undetectable = Untransmittable (“U=U”) concept and campaign to build and communicate an international scientific consensus on a revolutionary but widely unknown fact: people living with HIV who are on treatment and have an undetectable viral load CANNOT sexually transmit HIV. Our collaborative work in advocacy, education, and communications has resulted in historic global changes to policy and practice, dismantling stigma and improving HIV prevention and treatment efforts worldwide. In just a few years, PAC and partners grew U=U from a community-led health equity and human rights movement to a global mandate with over 1000 official partners, including governments and health ministries, research associations, industry partners, and community-based organizations in 105 countries. U=U education is now a funding requirement of the largest donors in the HIV/AIDS response (PEPFAR and The Global Fund) and a commitment adopted by nearly all United Nations member states. This rapid expansion of U=U from grassroots to global is a testament to the passion and power of communities joining with researchers, public health officials, and other allies to follow the science and advocate for all people living with HIV to have access to the information, treatment, and care to benefit from it. Together, we’re saving lives and accelerating the end of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
