I engineer 'learn by doing' experiences for people with lean, agile, & service design. I'm especially interested in teaching students and other teams how to collaborate more effectively. I also coach individuals, & facilitate co-creative events. This experience led me to write my latest book: 'Teaching Team Collaboration: the Human-Side of Software Development' so that I can help others learn from my experience. See link further below. This is also supported by more regular writing on the accompanying website and mail list at https://simplybegin.co.ukI'm interested in expanding my industry experience. My wide experience teaching students to use agile, lean and service design approaches to build software as teams, while also applying these same skills with clients via the Aberdeen Software Factory, mean I can bring a lot of experience to industry.I'm a senior lecturer in the Computer Science at the University of Aberdeen, where I teach students how to use agile, lean and service design approaches in their software development processes. Using these three approaches they can learn to co-create solutions with validated learning by bringing real people into the development process to clarify assumptions about their ideas. This blending of agile, lean startup and service design aspects in the software development work has proven popular and made for better applications. I use a variety of approaches to deliver interative sessions in the lecture and practical space of my teaching so that students are more likely to engage with the materials. I manage and organise the Aberdeen Software Factory where students build software for clients both as group projects, and also for paying clients to gain valuable work experience.I co-organise events based around computing and design at the university with my colleagues in Code The City, which focuses on using open data in civic apps for good. I also co-facilitate creative learning experiences. At the small-scale end my creative play-partner and I have hosted and facilitated playful experiences in the Maritime Museum and the Science Centre, as well as at conferences. At the larger end I have also facilitated a one-day open space for the Scrum Alliance in 2019 for over 700 people.I'm also a co-organiser of Play4Agile, the annual unconference for playful agile coaches, scrum masters an others. Here participants use open space to organise discussions about possible agile games, and other topics.

Founding Trustee And TreasurerCodethecity (Sc047835) Mar 2014 - PresentAberdeenCode the City is a volunteer led charity operating in a range of spaces. We started in Aberdeen in 2014 with a simple aim - to harness the digital talent in the city for social good. My role involves event logistics, publicity, fund raising and service development. We have been going for a number of years now and work in four spaces providing:a) Monthly meetups to bring the community togetherb)co-design and hack events where the community can work together sharing knowledge to build a better cityc) Projects such as Aberdeen Air where we're working with the community to deploy air quality monitors that feed into an online platform to provide information about the state of air in Aberdeen. -
Emeritus Senior Lecturer (Scholarship)University Of Aberdeen Jun 2001 - Jun 2024Aberdeen, United KingdomI am an Emeritus Senior Lecturer on the 'Scholarship' track in Computing Science at the University of Aberdeen. I mainly taught students how to collaborate in teams. I focused on software development and software engineering, programming, enterprise computing topics, service design approaches, and entrepreneurship ideas to students. Wherever appropriate I did this in the context of software project development concepts using agile and lean approaches. I also found ways to bring live clients to my student projects so that they gain more experience there too. I find 'learning by doing' trumps other approaches.Out of these combined interests I also set up and managed the Aberdeen Software Factory http://www.abdn.ac.uk/ncs/departments/computing-science/aberdeen-software-factory-338.php which matches student projects with clients who need work done. This worked for group projects, as well as contract work to good effect.Where possible I look for ways to engineer collisions between real world businesses and computing science students at University of Aberdeen because experience+theory trumps theory on its own.I had a number of roles within the department and the university:Chair of the University of Aberdeen Positive Outcomes Task Force, September 2015 to 2019, which means I also sat on the University Teaching and Learning Committee.Athena Swan Co-Chair for Natural and Computing Science September 2015 to 2018.Erasmus/Go Abroad Co-ordinator for Computing Science September 2015 to presentIndustrial Liaison Co-ordinator for Computing Science September 2015 to presentProgramme Tutor, MSc/PgDp Software Project Management, September 2008 to 2012. -
Owner/ManagerSelf-Employed Jun 1993 - Aug 2003I worked for myself for a while doing various types of work. This including buying/selling antique maps and prints at fairs and over the internet. This grew into an off-shoot business of building web applications and other programming work for local businesses.
