Dr. Bruno Fong-Martinez recently joined the Kiewit Concrete Materials team as a Concrete Engineer. Prior to this, he earned his civil engineering Ph.D. with a focus on concrete durability from The University of Texas at Austin. As a researcher, Bruno investigated alternative solutions to durability-related issues that have been previously mitigated using fly ash. Given the current industry concerns regarding fly ash availability, the project’s goal was to evaluate alternatives to fly ash, such as the use of chemical admixtures specifically aimed at improving concrete durability. The TxDOT-funded research project involved extensive testing and emphasized the importance of correlating lab and field results. As a Concrete Engineer, Bruno uses his technical background to improve concrete operations with an emphasis on practicality. He regularly develops and reviews technical specifications, optimizes concrete mixture designs, troubleshoots field issues, participates in technical risk assessments, develops protocols for durability, and performs service life analyses.Bruno has ample research and teaching experience and hopes to teach the world the difference between concrete and cement.

Graduate Research AssistantThe University Of Texas At Austin 2015 - 2020Austin, Tx, UsChemical Solutions to Concrete Durability Problems - TxDOT Research ProjectResearch alternative solutions to durability-related issues that have been mitigated through the use of fly ash in the past. Changes in fly ash quality and quantity spurred by new emissions standards have created a major concern that fly ash will not be able to fill these needs in the long term. Therefore, the goal of this project is to evaluate chemical alternatives to fly ash, such as the use of chemical admixtures aimed at specifically improving concrete durability. -
