I was also one of those children that would take their toys apart in order to figure out how they worked, what secrets they contained, what made them tick and yes, you probably did that too. In my particular case that the curiosity never really went away, it only got worse. The toys got more complicated in the form of electronic circuits and trying to figure how to get them to do “cool things”, in fact, why stick to electronics if you can learn how to build model airplanes, radios, antennas, instruments, etc. So, fast forward a few years and an engineering degree and my physics and electronics background got me into space electronics. I learned about systems engineering by having the opportunity to architect complete solutions from start to finish. I dealt with turning the blank page into a design, doing the mechanics, electronics, photonics, prototyping, simulating, building, testing, problem-solving, making changes, and more changes, loosing sleep and having fun all at the same time. Now, as I write this summary about myself, I realize that the intellectual curiosity is as strong as ever was, the energy source of creativity, the fuel of initiative, of learning. What questions are still there for us to answer? How far can we go?Like Robert A. Heinlein said:“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”
