About Bruno Moonen
Dr. Bruno Moonen is the Deputy-Director for Malaria and part of the leadership team that guides the Foundation’s strategy and efforts to eradicate malaria.Before joining the Global Health Program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Dr. Moonen worked for the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) leading their global malaria programs on access to treatment, sustainable financing and elimination. Prior the CHAI, Bruno worked for Médecins sans Frontières (MSF) mainly in the Horn of Africa, and was a consultant for Epicentre, doing nutritional surveys and program evaluations, UNICEF, supporting polio vaccination campaigns in DRC, and Roll Back Malaria. In 2005 he became the Malaria Technical Adviser with MERLIN for the Global Fund Malaria Program in Somalia.Dr. Moonen holds a Medical Degree from the University of Leuven, a Diploma in Tropical Medicine from the Tropical Institute in Antwerp and an MSc in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine

I have driven much of CHAI’s malaria program over the past four years, conceiving and implementing a novel approach to assessing malaria elimination that is now being taken forward by the WHO, guiding and managing support for four Southern African countries, and helping design and launch CHAI’s support for the AMFm, including overall leadership of the first phase of this project. I have significant experience managing numerous staff, multi-million dollar projects, and relationships with both endemic country governments and global organizations. I have collaborated on numerous research projects and am the author of a range of scholarly publications on malaria and global health.

Manager of the Southern Africa Malaria Elimination Support Team of the Global Health Group, University of California as from 1 July 2009.
