About Bruno Mundim

I am a physicist working in the field of numerical relativity and computational astrophysics. My research consists in solving the Einstein's equations of General Relativity (or an approximation to them) for celestial objects which are too compact for an accurate description by Newton's theory of gravity. Examples of such compact objects are black-holes and neutron stars.I am most interested when they happen to be in a binary system since this configuration provides a unique laboratory to probe the gravitational field in its strong, dynamical regime. In addition, the interaction of surrounding matter with this strong field might provide signatures of its own existence and potentially unveil new physics happening under such extreme conditions. The Einstein's equations are very complex to be amenable to analytic techniques. Except for the most simple cases, in general we need to resort to numerical techniques to find their solutions. The Einstein's equations in its original tensorial form are cast then into an initial value problem form. As a result, four constraint partial differential equations (PDE) need to be satisfied at all times, while the gravitational field is evolved from its initial configuration by the so called evolution equations. The constraint equations are classified as elliptic PDEs and the evolution ones as hyperbolic PDEs.I have more than ten years experience on solving both kind of PDEs arising from this formulationof the Einstein's equations. The resulting numerical code allows us to study a large variety of astrophysical systems. The most interesting of them are also the most computationally expensive ones. We make use of different parallelization techniques such as OpenMP and MPI. I have several years of experience in dealing with the development, testing, and production deployment of these codes on high performance computing (HPC) clusters (or supercomputers).
