ADG Brasil is the Brazilian Association of Graphic Designers, founded in 1989, the largest and most representative design association in the country. It holds local and national exhibitions, workshops, debates, awards and events of various kinds, and provides support to competitions, publications, seminars and congresses. Since 1992, ADG Brasil conducts the biggest Latin American design event, the Brazilian Graphic Design Biennial, as well as other international gatherings. In the year it celebrated its 25th anniversary, the Biennial was held for the first time in Brasilia - from August 4 to September 10, 2017 - in a joint realization of ADG Brasil and Adegraf, the Graphic Designers Association of the Federal District. The jury of the 12th Biennial - composed of 97 professionals from 23 countries in five continents - analyzed 1391 entries and selected 500 projects, which were included in the printed and online catalogs.

Located in Brasilia, the Association of Graphic Designers of the Federal District brings together professionals working in the graphic design field in the region of Brazil's capital. IESB's Graphic Design Undergraduate Technical course was ranked the #1 Graphic Design Course in Brazil at the 2015-2017 Ministry of Education - MEC / INEP evaluation conducted in all Graphic Design courses, including Bachelor's degrees, from private and public educational institutions in the country. In 2016, Centro Universitário IESB was named Design Education Institution of The Year by the Brazilian Design Companies Association - ABEDESIGN.IESB's Graphic Design Undergraduate Technical Program enables its students to develop skills in the areas of communication, design and visual arts, finding jobs in advertising and design agencies, media and communication companies, as well as in-house organs of several companies. Since its first edition in 1992, the Biennial has been the grand celebration of Brazilian Graphic Design. It is the most traditional assembly of all members – professionals, clients, suppliers, scholars, educators and students – of this huge segment of the creative industry. http://www.bienaladg.org.br/ The 10th edition of the Biennial held in São Paulo on June 2013 showcased 444 projects — developed from 2009-2012 — selected by a diverse jury of 89 renowned professionals from 13 countries.

A federal government initiative, DesignBrasil.org.br was the main website dedicated to the design industry in Brazil. I chronicled and reviewed graphic design projects, exhibitions, events, competitions, publications and the occasional scandal (plagiarism accusation, piracy, spec work debate, etc.), both in Brazil and China. Even after all the columns were discontinued, in 2012, I contributed on occasion with the Opinion section of the website until its termination, in 2019.

Big fun, party time, excellent! Working side-by-side with renowned graphic artist Marcelo Martinez – and later joined by interactive design genius Daniel Morena – and many talented interns and assistants that we proudly see today making a name for themselves as graphic designers, type designers, web designers, animators and lecturers, not only in Brazil but in countries such as Spain, UK and USA.A brilliant run through the 1990s and early 2000s design world developing publications, identity systems, illustrations, promotional materials, typefaces, packages, multimedia projects & being published, exhibited, awarded & making friends, because of that. As we parted, we celebrated a decade of design projects in the book ‘Porto+Martinez designStudio 1996 > 2004’.

In my second college year, I got an "in-house graphic design internship position" at one of the campuses of the largest and most renowned private Law Schools in Rio de Janeiro in the 1990s. I was originally to give in-house support to an outside design agency that did all the branding for the school, but that lasted about two months when their contract ended and I "became" the Graphic Design Department. So I pretty much learned everything as I went along: starting with hand painting banners and posters, to designing, quoting, and producing everything they needed, from certificates, direct mail advertising, and scientific publications to the campus way-finding system.They remained a client of Porto+Martinez designStudio, where we did all the promotional materials for their post-graduate program courses for another five years. When they achieved University status (becoming Universidade Candido Mendes Ipanema) we developed their brand identity.

Between finishing high school and starting college, I was lucky enough to be taken in by Ivan G. Ferreira and his Modonovo Design team. There I had the opportunity to learn first hand what real graphic design was, and how it relates to architecture and product design, since two of Modonovo's expertise's have always been (since 1977) visual identity & signage systems. I spent almost one year doing what today is considered 'old school' design studio tasks: hand-painting logo layouts with Magic Markers on tracing paper, producing stationary mock-ups with photocopies, cleaning Rotring ink pens and T-squares, sorting out printing film negatives of old and new jobs, dry transferring Letraset like there's no tomorrow and, reluctantly, commissioning body copy to typesetting companies. I loved every minute of it (now, of course).As years went by, we developed a great partnership, and frequently collaborated on projects at both Porto+Martinez designStudio (such as the signage system of the Santa Teresa neighborhood, in 1998) and Bruno Porto Comunicação Visual (such as the visual identity & way-finding systems of João Havelange Olympic Stadium, in 2007).
