As a Surgical Registrar at the University of the Free State, I am currently training as a General Surgeon. This course focuses on the speciality of General Surgery and encompasses all of the relevant disciplines in general surgery. Several sub-specialities have already been covered in my course thus far; these include; burns, trauma and critical care, this in addition to the general surgery rotations. These rotations are 3 months in duration.My work includes operative management of general surgical patients, the management of these patients the surgical outpatient, or clinic setting, peri-operative management of patients and emergency or trauma medicine related to general surgery.Examples of emergency care include the surgical management of surgical conditions such as appendicitis and trauma related injuries such as acute abdomens due to blunt or penetrating trauma, stabbed necks, stabbed hearts or gunshot wounds. The course also provides in-depth academic training, where Registrars are expected to contribute and participate in the academic life of the General Surgery Department. I have presented several times in the academic meetings with in-depth presentations on various academic subjects. In addition to attending lectures, morbidity and mortality meetings, radiology discussions and symposiums, there is also a research component to the course, where the Registrar must complete a research project.My research is currently focused on the determination of the age of a deep vein thrombosis using grayscale ultrasonography technology. I am still in the review and development of phase of the study.I have completed and passed the CMSA FCS (Primary) exam in March 2015

As a Medical Officer based at Worcester Community Health Centre (GGS-40) I was involved in a centre providing diverse medical and health solutions to the population of the Breede-valley district.The services which I was involved in included: acute medical services, emergency medicine, chronic disease management, HIV medicine including paediatric HIV, TB medicine, community based obstetrics, small surgical procedures and wound management. The centre has a multidisciplinary approach, and close relationship exists between doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers and specialist departments at Worcester Provincial Hospital.As a doctor in the team, I also drove out to the outlying clinics in the area to provide support of these clinics. Rawsonville Clinic was the clinic I was responsible for. I had a specific day in which to attend to problem cases at the clinic. I also supported the medical staff at the Blind Institute. Here I was consulted by the residents and patients at the Institute. In the same line, I was the attending medical officer at several of the Old Age Homes in the Worcester and Rawsonville areas. I was consulted weekly by these care centres, and was available to them for ant emergencies. The University of Stellenbosch has the Rural School of Medicine - Ukwanda. The students involved in this program spend time in the clinic. I was involved in their medical education under the leadership of Prof, Hoffie Conradie. These students are actively taught by the doctor team. I have also been involved in the Avian Park Ukwanda project, providing supervision to the students.I did overtime at Brewelskloof Hospital, a tuberculosis hospital. I was responsible for the care of these patients afterhours and on weekends. Academic meetings were attended.Focus on continued development was maintained and lectures for the multidisciplinary team or initiative development involving the multidisciplinary team was mandatory.

Hillcare Medical Center provided general medical services to the Upper Highway area in Durban. I functioned as a General practitioner. Extended services included a surgery focusing on small surgical procedures in addition to acute medicine, chronic disease management and other medical issues.

Interns follow a prescribed syllabus set out by the Health Professions Council of South Africa. This course includes rotations through all the major disciplines of medicine. 3 month rotations through surgery, family medicine, paediatrics, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedics, psychiatry and emergency medicine.The two year long internship also had an afterhours call system, where I spent my overtime in the Accident and Emergency Department of Worcester Hospital.

I was a senior in the Prosthetics department at Steve Biko Hospital. I was responsible for the manufacture and fitting of prosthetic both upper and lower prosthetic limbs. Part of the job also included the fitment and production of orthotic devices such as back braces.
