Utility Forester / Arborist
Creating vegetation management plans for ComEd construction projects.
Consulting Utility Forrester-Midcycle Planner
I was responsible for maintaining vegetation clearances on 34KV circuits that are halfway through their trimming cycle. These line surveys are high priority because they are higher voltage, and run from substation to substation. My duties consisted of walking and driving entire circuits to identify hazardous vegetation conditions. All hazardous vegetation is flagged and photographed using proprietary GIS software to create work plans and maps for the tree contractors. One major part of planning is giving proper notification to all property owners and gaining all permits (removal, IDOT, wetland, railroad, etc.) where necessary, for work being performed. Last in the planning process would be walking down all locations on the circuit with the acting general foreman. Any changes to hours, equipment, or permitting are done at this time. All plans are put though a QA process after all tree work is completed, as to make sure all specs are met.
Consulting Utility Forrester-Work Order Team (Skokie/Mt.Prospect)
All new, repair, and upgrade ComEd construction projects start with vegetation planning. This is to ensure all clearances and future reliability. First, I was sent construction plans from ComEd Project Managers detailing their scope of work. Walk downs of these sites with the PM was necessary in most projects. Once the construction needs are understood, the planning process begins by identifying vegetation that needs to be trimmed or removed. All vegetation is flagged and photographed using GIS software to create work plans and maps for the tree contractors. The final phase in the planning process is gaining all necessary permits (Removal, IDOT, wetland, railroad, etc.) as well as making all notifications to property owners at stake. Sometimes, in more complex jobs, a walk down of the plan with the tree crew general foreman was necessary. This is to ensure that all their needs to complete the job safely are also met. After the vegetation work is scheduled and completed, QA is done to ensure there are no trimming deficiencies that need addressing before construction begins. After ComEd construction is done, post construction QA is completed. This is to identify if anything had changed during the construction process that would not fulfill previous clearance and reliability needs.
Consulting Utility Forester- Work Week Manger Nw Region
As WWM, I was the single point of contact for all emergent vegetation work coming in, and going out from the Northwest region of Illinois. My region contained three Davey Emergent Planners, (2) two-man tree crews, and one GF. All the Davey planned work would be uploaded on-line. I would then download all the raw data into a Google spreadsheet to organize it. Next, I would lay out work for the current week on a shared tracking sheet, while keeping budgets for multiple trimming programs in mind. I would send daily emails with all maps and plans needed to complete work to the tree crews, and their GF. Crews could be pulled for emergencies or weather, requiring multiple updates to the shared tracking sheet. My other duties were to coach, and QC 20% of all work put out by each Davey planner. I also wrote all the plans for any scheduled power outage needed for my tree crews to preform work safely. I was the storm lead for two of an eight-week storm duty cycle and lead weekly safety calls.
Consulting Utility Forester- Emergent Planner
As an emergent planner, I was responsible for screening vegetation emergencies around power lines and equipment. These issues were usually called in by customers or linemen on duty. I would survey the issue and establish threat priority levels, scope of work needed, and eventually dispatched tree crews to mitigate threats. I also created vegetation management plans for the needs to repair, upgrade, or install equipment. The plans were dependent on species, health, location, and environment. Plans can also vary due to special inspection sites or various specs used. I was also responsible for keeping organization and records, providing a premier customer experience, QA of all veg work done, interruption investigations, and storm response.
Ecological Restoration Technician
Helped manage invasive species in natural areas, bio-swells, and wetlands. The daily mitigation routine varied depending on job location but mostly consisted of applying herbicide, mowing, and brush cutting. Sites where restoration was taking place, required duties such as laying erosion blankets, planting native plants, and seeding.
Outreach; Peer-To-Peer Advising
I was initially hired by the department to help produce outreach materials including transfer guides and program brochures. I also attended open houses and orientations to recruit students to the program. Shortly after I started, we lost our advisor and office manager, so I took the initiative and began advising students from a peer role. I also had office hours where students could come and have study sessions.
Student Worker
The Student Life Office at Elgin Community College housed all the clubs, organizations, and 1st year programs on campus. It was my responsibility to open and close the office daily as well as work the front desk. Front desk duties required me to answer the phone, answer questions from office visitors, scheduling appointments and maintaining inventory on all office supplies and rental equipment. I was also responsible for overseeing all posted material around campus and training new employees every semester.
