My high school had a medical careers program that I got accepted into and I was given the opportunity to shadow/intern for Athletico Physical Therapy during my first semester of senior year in high school. I quickly learned and became comfortable with the various physical therapy modalities, such as TENS (transcutaeneous electrical neuromuscular stimulation, kinesiology taping, joint mobilization, thermal therapy, etc. I really enjoyed the patient interaction but also the feeling of reward from helping the patient and staff provide the best care. Once I became more comfortable, the physical therapists allowed me to demonstrate and instruct the patient on their given exercises recommend by the physical therapist. This opportunity allowed me to grow my ability to translate instructions on how to use a given modality in a clear and concise manner.

This was an eye opening experience as I learned a lot about what goes on behind the scenes during a typical work day. I enjoyed observing the various types of units there are in the hospital and realizing how broad medicine can be. After this experience, I realized how rewarding the field of medicine can be after helping patients recover and feel better.
