I've always felt that the most effective leaders have a healthy balance of academic learning and practical experience across a wide range of fields. In my career I have brought both my education and experience together, solving complex policy issues, improving organizational efficiency, and responding to constituents needs and concerns. I count myself lucky to have had a rich and broad range of life experiences, a theme I have continued to follow by constantly learning new skills and maintaining a wide range of interests. Among them, I am most proud of my ability to communicate difficult or complex concepts to novices and experts alike, meeting people "where they are", and to facilitate community meetings and conversations to build consensus. Having a strong academic background develops intellectual rigor, but people tend to connect when they find commonality, and I find that also having a more broad range of life experience provides greater opportunities to find that common ground.
