Senior Coordinator (Created Position)
Monitored real time live (e.g. Eastern time zone feed) and pre-recorded captioning program streams (e.g. repeat feeds to Central, Mountain and Pacific time zones) to determine presence of accurate captions. Assisted outside captioning service providers, and other relevant CBS internal operating units with breaking news which requires closed captioning, any updates or changes to repeat feeds and/or contact caption service providers promptly if there is a caption loss or obvious compromise of captions. Oversaw captioning for NFL Sunday games, the NFL Today broadcast and 60 Minutes. I checked sports equipment prior to broadcast to ensure there were no malfunctions that could cause a caption loss. In the event of a captioning loss, I would coordinate between network engineers and our captioning vendors on the best way to resolve the issue. As a supervisor, I revamped the job responsibilities of closed captioning coordinators by creating the coordinator manual to ensure deliverable best practices between the needs of the captioning and video description department and CBS News broadcasts. The CBS Captioning and Video Description Department looses “institutional” knowledge someone leaves the position for an internal or external opportunity. This manual is updated every few months to ensure that there is a smooth transition from one employee to the next.
Broadcast Associate
I was primarily responsible for producing video for airing throughout the weeknight broadcast. The daily 4-5 voice over stories that I was responsible for ranged from international stories to celebrity news. My keen eye for creativity and details led me to become the primary voice over producer. I was also the “breaking news” producer during the broadcast. If there was a breaking news story I would have to assemble material for air. Breaking news stories often are assembled within a few minutes for national airing. I was also responsible for researching and acquiring video from CBS Archives and CBS Documentary Archives to assist producers with various pieces. My deep knowledge of the archives system made me the “go to guy” for many producers in the New York headquarters and in the eight bureaus around the country.
Coordinator
Coordinated closed captioning for the CBS Evening News, breaking news and special events to ensure the broadcast was compliant with federal law. Co-produced “Fallen Heroes” segment that honored military personnel that died in the line of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. I produced 1-2 stories per week. Wrote daily summaries of Evening News stories for the CBS News Gazette where I was often cited for my attention to detail. These daily summaries were sent the 1200 employees of the news division and archived in case a story or full broadcast needed to be referenced. Acted as a liaison between senior staff and producers and correspondents in the field. Printed and distributed scripts for broadcast.Interviewed people in New York and the surrounding area for broadcast as an off- air field producer/reporter. On average, I would get about five-six people to answer my questions on camera and choose the best responses for air.
