Hello! My name is Bryan Powell, a born-and-raised Californian that's always had a passion for both science and people. As such, I chose to pursue a path in engineering, where I can help my world through numbers, research, and design. Through Linkedin, I'm not only looking to network with fellow engineers and former classmates, but also to broaden my options of what I can possibly achieve with my mechanical engineering degree. Besides doing your common-labor jobs throughout high school and college, like parks/recreation or cashiering, I also have experience in a variety of engineering projects thanks to the UC. Namely, I was the project manager for a team of over 20 students that helped to develop an interactive kids' science museum exhibit that outlined the consequences of thawing permafrost. Another group I worked with was for the company Corigin Solutions, Inc. where a small group of fellow mechanical engineering students and myself assisted in creating a quenching system for an oxidizing, easily-reactive product. Finally, one of my most recent positions was with the Morning Star Company, where I was an R&D field engineer that helped install and maintain an experimental, hydraulics-based, computer-aided control system for different tomato harvester models. Here's some of my info below; feel free to add me and we can both expand our connections!

R&D Field EngineerThe Morning Star Company Jun 2022 - Nov 2022Los Banos, California, United StatesMy first official engineering position after earning my Bachelor's, the Morning Star Company works with local tomato growers in California as a crop harvesting service. In particular, I worked with a small team of R&D colleagues on what we called the "auto-header program," in which we installed a system on nine different tomato harvesters that would assist drivers in collecting from the field more efficiently. There were two specific types of harvesters that we worked on, and each machine has their own quirks and specifications; but the overall work was an amazing, hands-on experience with shop work, hydraulics, electronics, programming, and rapid critical thinking that all had to be carried out in the tomato fields in the middle of harvest season. -
Financial OfficerCorigin Solutions, Inc. Jan 2022 - May 2022Merced, California, United StatesMy team worked with Corigin Solutions, Inc., on further developing one of their agricultural products: Corichar. This product is a biochar created from smelting down almond shells, and is particularly useful as a soil enhancer. However, as this biochar comes out of the production line and is exposed to oxygen in the air, it begins to react and spontaneously combust. As a team, we came up with a solution that involved a system that would spray the Corichar with water as it leaves a pre-existing airlock. This not only lowered the temperature of the material so it was safer to handle with packaging, but it also properly quenched and stabilized the biochar so that it would no longer be reactive. -
Project ManagerFresno Discovery Center Jan 2021 - May 2022Fresno, California, United StatesProject Permafrost was a commission from a local children's science museum, the Fresno Discovery Center, to develop an interactive table that would show the affects of thawing permafrost on an environment due to global warming. These interactions came from moving a slider across the front of the table that activated switches which in turn moved parts on a diorama on top of the table and play animations on a screen above the tabletop. As a working member of this project, we used a combination of computer-aided design, electronics, economic analysis, and failure analysis to design our product for the Fresno Discovery Center. As a project manager for the team of near 25 people working on this project, I was responsible for ensuring tasks were being distributed evenly and done in a timely manner amongst all members, I attended weekly meetings with supervising staff to update them on progress, and I lead meetings with the entire team to plot out next steps. -
Aircraft Restoration InternCastle Air Museum Aug 2019 - Dec 2019Merced, California, United StatesOnce a week, I would take a shuttle bus from UC Merced to the Castle Air Museum to work along with--and more importantly, learn from--the aircraft restoration staff. Working in a World War II era hangar, I became very acquainted with a variety of tools, from drills to sanders to rivet presses. As a final project, we repurposed the fuselage from an RB-36h "Peacemaker" to draft, design, and custom-make business card holders.
