In 2016, while I was in 8th grade, I was playing football when I began to deal with significant leg pain that led to the question of whether I should continue or not. Over one particular weekend, I had been mulling over this question - talking to my mother, crying, praying about what the next chapter may reveal.When we came back to practice on Monday, the coaching staff asked me how I wanted to deal with telling my teammates that I was switching roles. This excerpt comes from my coach for that season, "He was still a little hesitant, but he agreed to come with us and shadow us during practice. As the kids warmed up, we asked Bryan how he wanted to tell the boys. We said we could tell them or that he could do it, or that we could tell them together. His response was mind-blowing. Without hesitation, he told us that he should tell them, as it was ultimately his decision. Then without only about 4-5 minutes to think about what he might say, he stood up in front of the team and proceeded to bring several of us coaches to tears. His spontaneous display of maturity and comportment in an unbelievably tough moment was astounding. He told them that he had come to this very tough decision for the interest of his health and that he would take this year to get stronger and faster. He thanked them profusely for supporting him through the years as teammates and friends. He said it would be hard, but he was excited for his new role, and throughout his brief but captivating couple of minutes he expressed that he didn't want to be seen differently. " "I know some of the boys teared up as well, as they caught a glimpse of how a person should handle an extremely difficult situation with grace and composure. I let them know that if each of them played with half of Bryan's heart and conviction, we would blow away every opponent by 50."This day marked the first time that I realized how impactful a voice could be, and ignited a fire in me to fulfill roles in public speaking, content creation, community engagement and athlete management which I have illustrated through stints as a team manager, broadcaster, producer, podcast host and advisor. Entering my final year at Michigan State, with one degree in hand, this is the type of impact I desire to make each day, and wherever I may be called to go during my career journey.
