In 1989 my Dad was paralyzed in a farming accident. His prognosis was poor. The experts said he would never walk again. The specialist began fitting him for a wheelchair. The insurance company stopped paying for therapy. But that was not his outcome - some very incredible people gave him a chance. They were PT’s. 2 years after the accident, he stood and then he walked. Not normal walking. He used crutches and AFO’s. He struggled and he fell. But he never quit. He never let the injury define him. I was 5 years old when my Dad took his first steps for the second time. I am incredibly fortunate to have witnessed a case study like this so early in life. It became clear that physical therapy was the precise career choice to align with my passion and desire help people move better. I carry with me the knowledge and experience that anything is possible with effort. That hard work pays dividends. And that a body in motion, stays in motion. I learned these lessons by watching my dad learn to walk.My hope is to help patients learn that recovery is possible, belief yields change and our bodies respond to the force that’s placed upon them, even if that’s no force at all. We live in a world where mobility is taken for granted until it’s taken away. The loss of mobility can either define you or paralyze you. It is not only your greatest asset but also how you survive. We must appreciate the preservation of mobility at a high level and work daily to sustain it. This is my why.
